Canada JCI. Newsletter - March 2004

President Charle’s Message

Hello to all of you. The weather in our area has been reasonably good for the last couple of weeks, compared to what it was earlier. Hope you all are well and that many of you will be finalizing your plans to come to the Crew Meeting in Moncton. Plans are progressing well. The committee is trying to estimate the number of people who will attend, so reasonably accurate estimates can be given to the hotel for meals, the tour, golf etc. It is a busy weekend at the hotel, so please register as soon as you can. I know a number of us put things off until the last hour, however we can change. Let’s do it now!!! See the included program information, and registration forms for more information.

Our condolences go out to Debbie Price and her Family on the passing of her Father recently. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. For those of you who don't know, Debbie is the wife of U.S. J.C.I. Senate President John Price.

It is great to have Candidates already for the offices of President and Vice President, as well as a host for the Crew Meeting in 2005. There are also two Cities who are considering a bid for 2006 and one for 2007. It is great to see that kind of interest in our organization. Thank you all for your comments and contributions of your choice. That is what keeps the Newsletter interesting and dollars to keep operating. Best regards to all and look forward to seeing you at the Crew meeting.

Senator Walter Gargaro 11766, Barney says he owes you a few drinks for spelling your name wrong in the January 2004 Newsletter. But you will have to come to the 2004 Crew Meeting in Moncton to make good on his promise.

There are still 210 copies of the Canada J.C.I. Senate Directory in stock. Anyone wishing to purchase a copy may do so by sending $15.00 directly to Barney or include that amount along with your contribution and show same on the form.

Thank Barney and our web master Alan Salmon for coming up with a way to get the Newsletter to those who have difficulty reading it.

Secretary Treasurer Barney has received a number of requests from Senators to delete them from the mailing list because their eyesight has deteriorated. He contacted Webmaster Senator Alan Salmon and between them they have decided to solve the problem by making a CD or a tape for each member that needs this service.

The special service will be available starting with the Apr 2004 Newsletter. Webmaster Senator Alan Salmon will look after recording the information on a CD or tape and his company will bear the cost of producing the Newsletter by this method.

Any Governors, Senators or Maple Leafs wishing to use this method to receive the Newsletter are asked to inform Secretary Treasurer Barney as soon as possible by regular mail or E-Mail and let him know of your requirement. Barney’s address is 8500 Bairdmore Crescent, Richmond, BC V7C 1M7 or send by E-Mail to <canadajcisenate@shawcable.com>.

Letterhead - Due to the fact that no further letterhead has been received from the membership, the Secretary Treasurer has created four different ones for the Canada J.C.I. Senate Newsletter. The first one is used for the March 2004 issue and the next three will be used for April, June and July 2004. Ensure you keep the first page of each Newsletter in order to review and inform him of your choice. Members can either E-Mail: canadajcisenate@shawcable.com or write to Barney at 8500 Bairdmore Crescent, Richmond, BC V7C 1M7 advising him of their choice of letterhead after the July 2004 Newsletter.

Senator Barney C Ziola 14018 – Secretary Treasurer

For your information we have the following safe guard programs on the Canada J.C.I. Senate computer. They help protect our computer and our members from receiving any Trojans, Viruses, Spyware and Pests from us:-

a. McAfee Firewall     b. Ad-aware 6.O   c. Pest Patrol    d. Norton AntiVirus 2003      e. House Call

Norton AntiVirus 2003 automatically completes a scan on all incoming and outgoing E-Mail messages for any viruses.

I always check out the computer by Ad-aware 6.0, House Call and Pest Patrol programs prior to sending out the Newsletter each month and also on a daily basis. The Norton AntiVirus program completes an automatic scan daily after I go to bed.

If any member receives any of the problems mentioned in paragraph one above from our computer, I apologize in advance. As I don’t know what else that I can do to safe guard you all 100%.

CLARK, Robert W 6072 – 1587 St. Lawrence Ave., RR # 1, Treasurer Island, Kingston, ON K7L 4V1 (R613-546-0022) (Fax: 613-549-8410)(E-Mail: bobmyr@adan.kingston.net)(Myrna) – CAN’T CHANGE HISTORY.  (Bob – What can you say when you are having a good time – Barney).

CHECKERIS, Ernie J 2581 – Teen Tree Pah, 2069 Sunnyside Road, Sudbury, ON P3G 1H9 (R705-522-5456) (Muiriel) – I just turned 79 and heading for the 80’s.  Titanium knee is real good – except at the airport – it sure makes a buzz, but they feel my knee and all is well.  Here are a few bucks.  It’s great to keep in touch with the gang of old – but they are shrinking. That guy Barney is sure on top of the a/c receivables and it is a pleasure to be a member and maintain memories. It sure helped this Greek kid to own and operate a business, to be retired and enjoy the noises of my children and grand kids. I do enjoy good health and ask those Greek Gods to smile on the Canada J.C.I. Senate. (Ernie – Yes Barney does a great job with the Newsletter, finances and trying to keep us on track.  We all received a lot from our membership in Jaycees – Charles.

PROSENYAK, Stephen J 1365 – 214 Banbury Road, Don Mills, ON M3B 3C5 (R416-449-6189) (Eleanor) – I appreciate receiving the Newsletters, thank you Charles, Barney and Molly. Do find the enclosed contribution and also some news.  Things have been hectic in our lives – much to do health wise, including twice a week physiotherapy for both of us. That did not prevent some art work including shows at the C.N.L., Budapest, Hungary and a number of local events – albeit on a limited scale.

Our most recent event was to attend the Quebec Winter Carnival in its closing week. This year was the “BIG ONE” - yep this Carnival has been going since 1954 – thus celebrating its 50th year.  Thirty businessmen and a ready made contingent of groups, like the Quebec Junior Board of Trade (It was my privilege to be the incumbent President), skiers, curlers, University students, civil employees, snow shoe members, and LaJeune Chambre supplied the resources to start things off in 1954 with the first crowning of the Queen. The local Quebec Chronicle Telegraph newspaper featured the Carnival in a special edition and the Junior Board of Trade is prominent in the report. Individually mentioned because of long association are Senators George Leebosh 2004, Roland F Jarjour 11363 and yours truly. There were many fellow members equally deserving recognition. The entire unit worked together.

The Carnival events were exciting – specifically the Ice Canoe Race across the St. Lawrence.  Senator Pete Kennedy 7876 had his Calgary team really trying but despite wife Dorothy’s best efforts, said they would try harder next year! Also helping out the Calgarians was Brother Albert Prosenyak 14825 with whom Eleanor and I visited – he has been Carnival involved for over three decades. The highlight of the celebrations was the 50th Carnival Queens formal ball held at the Chateau Frontenac. It was a Cinderella affair. Eleanor and I enjoyed meeting the other “oldies” including Carnival Queen 1955 – Estelle Cote Boucher. What fun and the final event of the celebrations was the upper town parade – featuring Bonhomme accompanied by floats, musical and parading groups. The weather co-operated somewhat, there was more snow (not needed), the temperature dropped to -30F (not appreciated), but as usual the Quebecers and visitors let “naught” stand between them and a good time.    “VIVE LE CARNIVAL”

INGLIS, Thomas H 2413 – 1107 – 1320 Islington Ave., Etobicoke, ON M9A 5C6 (R416-231-6042) (E-Mail: thomashinglis@aol.com) (Lena) – I don’t know if anyone has notified you that Patricia, the wife of Senator Gordon A Wiley 10494 passed away last month. Gordon was President of the Toronto Junior Board of Trade who was responsible for Toronto going 100% for J.C.I. which was an accomplishment back about 1962. (Thomas – Our condolences go out to Gordon and his family – Barney).

BUTTERFIELD, C Edward 16632 – 1775 Layton Dr., North Vancouver, BC V7N 1X7 (R604-929-1991) (Fax: 604-924-1044) (E-Mail: tbutterfield@shaw.ca) (Fay ML 023) - Got the newsletter tonight and decided to get the cheque in the mail with this note. Saw that Derek and Bea Betts still hold out in northern Manitoba.  They left Calgary about the same time Fay and I left to come West in ‘73.  Do you still host ‘Scorpian parties’ Derek, or is that a long ago fond memory from Calgary days?  Fay and I celebrated our 40th in Jan and will reward ourselves with a trip to Europe in May with another 40th year Jaycee couple, the Thompson’s. Time flies when you are having fun.  Still working for now as CFO of a public company, but may look to apply my experience to a consulting role someday in the future.

GROOMBRIDGE, Leslie G 364 – 1648 Waddell Ave., Peterborough, ON K9K 2G8 (R705-741-0686) (Fax: 705-741-1547) (Laura) – Enclosed is my contribution for 2004. I continue to look forward to the Newsletter. I had a young man knock on my door last November who was looking for votes as a Councilor for Peterborough.  When seeking information from him he mentioned he was a former Jaycee from, I believe, Mississauga and in fact was a Past President of that group.  When I learned he was a past Jaycee, I invited him to set and we had a long chat. Needless to say I supported him both financially and at the polls.  He did not get elected but sure carried on the spirit, of Jaycees. (Leslie – I am sure that after your talk with him and also loosing the election, he will seek you out in the future for further advice – Barney).

FOUBERT, Tony 311249 – 829 Essa Road, Barrie, ON L4N 9G5 (R705-721-5246) (E-Mail: bfoubert@georgianc.on.ca) (Beverley ML 130) – Thanks for the Newsletter again. I am very busy here in Barrie working for the City as a Prosecutor, but loving my new job. Our Senate group still meets on Friday evenings with out better halves and often end up talking about the good old times. Senator Willard Everton 18338 has been quite ill and we don’t see much of Willard but our thoughts are with him and hoping he starts feeling his old self again soon. Senator Jim Shellswell 14300 passed away Jan 28, 2004. He had been fighting cancer for the past five years and it finally won, but Jim gave it a great fight. He will be missed by all of us here in Barrie. At his funeral at least 10 Senators, Maple Leafs and several past Jaycees/Jaycettes were in attendance which was so great to see the representation from the old boys. Hope to get to Calgary for the 2005 Crew Meeting.  It’s been a long time since I have attended and Calgary boys always know how to put on a good show. (Tony – Please pass on our condolences to Patricia and her family – Barney).

Senator Denis Sawkins 12054 – Secretary – New Zealand J.C.I. Senators Inc. (131 Pope St., Plimmerton, Wellington, NZ (E-Mail: nzjc.senators@xtra.co.nz) I send greetings from New Zealand and thank you for your February Newsletter. The New Zealand Senators are very active particularly with local functions and get together. We have been able with the updating of our data base to assist a number of regional groups to contact Senators who may have moved out of their area and this has increased the number of Senators getting together. Some Regional Senate groups are encouraging past Jaycees to attend get togethers with Senate groups. A lunch in Wellington recently was attended by 140 Senators, passed Jaycees and partners, enjoying a very pleasant Sunday lunch. In October 2003 some 40 Senators and partners joined with the Jaycees at their National Convention in Cromwell to hold the Senate AGM. This is the second year that we have again been part of the Jaycee Convention and we will join with them in Tauranga for their 2004 convention. Again Barney - thank you for your Newsletter.

VIGAR, Madonna – 75 Bartlett Cres., London, ON N6K 1W3 (R519-472-7356) – My husband Norman Senator 1757 passed away November 14, 2003. He had hip surgery and developed a blood clot in his lungs. He really enjoyed his time in the Jaycee’s with lots of friends and good times. He is also survived by son David, daughter Cheryl and grandchildren Rejas, Aaron and Meaghan. He was 77 years old. (Madonna – Our condolences go out to you and your family – Barney).

Also the many hundreds of friends and acquaintances that I gathered over my years in Jaycees now know where I can be found on their keyboards. (Ollie – remember that you should never be afraid of the computer. Never delete or save unless you really mean it – Barney).

RAMOS, Eugenio T 54982 – 605 – 185 Smith St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 3G4 (R204-947-2382) – Thank you for sending me the Newsletters regularly. I enjoy reading the success of our members and their families. Enclosed is my contribution for year 2004. I have attained another milestone in my life. I am now in my tenth year here in Canada, but still continue fighting because of racial discrimination. But I don’t forget what we have learned in the Jaycees, especially now that I am the Grand Knight (Bishop de Mazenod Council #11115). I am using the training we have; especially now that I need to prepare a bid book for our convention in April. Good Luck and more power for your good work.

MORTON Jr, Albert J 16254 – 1338 East Barden Road, Charlotte, NC 28226 (R704-366-6608)(Fax: 704-365-0321) (E-Mail: morton2451@aol.com)(Marlyn) – Enclosed is a financial contribution to the Canada J.C.I. I have two attributes of Champ Mike Weir – often wear a green jacket and I am a left handed golfer.  Unfortunately because of family and high school reunions Kay and I will not be at the Moncton Crew Meeting. I’m sure it will be another GREAT EVENT!! (George – We thank you for your comments and contribution. Glad to hear you are still active in London Senate. There are a good number of us left handed golfers out there!  Sorry to hear you won’t be in Moncton but maybe we will see you in Calgary – Charles).
