Canada JCI. Newsletter - August  2004

President Gary's Message

Our condolences go out to the families of Senators Nalliah Narendra 2048, Gerald D Willis 9113, Frank Harris 1082, Roy S Nishizaki 3000 and Maple Leafs 228 Judy Brighton, Maple Leaf 079 Judy Tustin.

Congratulations to Bill Rowe 3475 Past National President 1964 - 65 and Elaine on their 50th Wedding Anniversary. It was a surprise party. Seen arriving were Senators Barney Ziola 14018 and Molly, Tony Hunt 4951 and Brenda, Glen Steeves 4584 and Marie.

News from Bill Enefer 8136 that Rick Pinchin 26673 a Past President of the Winnipeg Junior Chamber has been elected Chairman of the Mid Canada JCI Senate. Congratulations Rick. Beware Victoria; Winnipeg has appointed their Chairman for their bid for the 2007 Crew Meeting to be presented at the Calgary Crew Meeting next May. The Co-Chairmen are John Deacon 25373 and Mike Pearson 25378 (Still working together, check their Senate numbers). Thank you for stepping forward.

It was great catching up with Jay Burns 2548. I met him when we were both loading a container of hospital supplies destined for the Philippines through the Rotary World Help Network. It was fun talking about the past but it’s no fun talking about how many years ago.

I gave my JCI Senate business card to the team leader at the loading and he proudly announced that he used to be a Jaycee but they kicked him out when he was 40. My reply to him was that I knew he had a great training back ground by his ability to lead. Former Jaycees will always standout in a crowd.

As your President I receive JCI Senate Newsletters from around the world and it keeps me informed about Jaycees and Senators. There are 200,000 JCI members and millions of JCI Alumni. There are 6000 communities located in more than 100 countries throughout the world.

The problem of Jaycee growth is improving but slowly as we all share the same goals.

The following is courtesy of the Australia Newsletter and a word from the World President! (Fernando Sanchez-Arias) (This message was sent to JCI members, world – wide)

“When I became a member, one of the most motivating events I remember was the awarding of JCI Senatorships to some of our colleagues, who were usually surprised at receiving the honor. Listening to the reasons why they were recognized, their achievements, their dedication and their discipline was extremely inspiring for me!

I believe in the importance of the JCI Senate for the present and future of our organization. JCI Senators in all our countries represent our past and are also the best examples of the present. They support, in many ways, the activities in our local and national organizations. Serving as an inspiration to current members, they motivate them to continue their JCI careers.

While in Estonia and Belgium, I had excellent conversations with Senate members and learned that active members interact with JCI Senators in countless ways that help members and that will help JCI be a larger, stronger, healthier and better-positioned organization.

Times have changed and we need to add more dynamism and effectiveness to all entities and systems that give life to JCI. In many countries and regions, the JCI Senate as an organization and Senators in general play a major role in improving their national organizations.

In Australia we see an excellent example of how a network of committed and successful Senators can add vitality and freshness to an organization that had been struggling for many years and is now full of energy, hope and certainty of its success.

Remember Activate and Re Activate Jaycees and new and long time Senators.

Thank you to all of you that have sent in a donation of your choice. Would you believe that there are approximately 600 Senators who have never sent in a donation? Yes it’s true! Our survival is in your hands.

Barney mails twice as many newsletters than e-mails. You can help to lower the overhead by receiving the Senate news by E-mail. If you are currently receiving the Newsletter by regular mail and have an E-Mail address, please help us cut down the expenses by letting Barney know if you wish to receive it by E-Mail.

I look forward to a change in the numbers above as well as your great comments.

Adios Gary!

Letterhead - The Executive would like to thank Senator James Dokken and the Calgary Crew committee for the design for the August 2004 Newsletter. Now that you have seen the last four Newsletters with a different logo, it requested that you advise Secretary Treasurer Senator Barney C Ziola at <canadajcisenate@shawcable.com> or by writing him at 8500 Bairdmore Crescent, Richmond, BC V7C 1M7 (R604-271-0788) of which one you prefer. The Letterhead for the July 2004 Newsletter has been withdrawn for consideration as it took up to many characters in transmission by E-Mail and overloaded a number of servers and members accounts.

Vice President – Senator Daniel G MacLaren 41351

Gerry was born in Fredericton, N.B. in 1935, relocated to Halifax in 1956 and returned to New Brunswick in 1977 and was employed by Ganong Bros. in St. Stephen.

He was tremendously active in his Church, Cancer Society, Hants West Liberal Association and Past President Windsor Jaycees and served as Atlantic Provinces President in 1969-70, the year he was awarded his Senatorship.

He was a great fan of the Boston Red Sox and the Hockey Bruins, who were often the topic of his conversation.  Gerry is survived by his wife Sheila Doreen, two stepchildren, two brothers and several nieces and nephews.

BLOSTEIN, Mitchell M 11416 – P.O. Box 642, RR #1, Dugald, MB ROE OKO (R204-222-2030)Fax: 204-878-9497) (Lorraine) – I enjoy reading the Newsletters and enclosed is an overdue contribution. In late August we will be re-locating our business. We have signed a lease on a new building (currently under construction) across the street from our present location in the town of Lorette, where it has been for over then years. The new store will be 40% larger. This is certainly more pleasant news than some of the events of last year. Last spring (2003), I was beaten by a gang of masked youths during an attempted robbery of our business. Five days later I had quadruple bypass surgery for which I had been on the waiting list for a number of months. (Mitch – I am very surprised at the sentence that the Judge gave to the youths involved in your case, especially after the seriousness of the offence and the beating you took. Most of the addresses that I have for our members are the home address which is published in the directory. A few have the business address. You should have a copy of the 2003 directory that I mailed to you by now – Barney).

HOEFT, Ralph E 9489 – 54 – 2705 Kingsway Dr, Kitchener, ON N2C 2T1 (R519-895-8528) (Frieda) – Please note change of address we have not moved, but the Post Office has just changed the number and Postal Code of our complex.

CUNNINGHAM, Paul F 3972 – 802 – 53 Thorncliffe Park dr., Toronto, ON M4H 1L1 (R416-696-9282) (Fax: 416-696-9298) (E-Mail: pfcinc@idirect.com) – When I saw the headline on the front page of the Globe and Mail “Building a Bodacious Buddha”, I said – that’s got to be Barney! How typical of you to continue demonstrating the Jaycee spirit by being the model for this outstanding project. Cheers. (Paul – That will cost you one Buddha sized bottle of “Crown Royal” the next time that we see each other – Barney).

HILL, R Cleveland 412 – 1122 – 20 Ave., Coaldale, AB T1M 1L4 (R403-345-6487) – Thank you for the July Newsletter regarding the Senate and it is great to hear from you Barney and I am pleased to enclose a cheque as my contribution.

Barney you are certainly busy on your computer, every time I open my E-Mail, you have something there. (Don – We look forward to seeing you in Calgary. You are so right Barney NEVER STOPS – Gary).
